Meditation - Spirit Animal (Totem)

I have always had a great interest in animal spirit guides, also known as Totems.
I think at different stages of our life different totems will come into play to guide and aid us.

I remembered this meditation from a while ago that I used to try and help me find my spirit animal, it may be altered slightly as it was a long time ago I did this.

1. Begin by breathing slowly. Some people find this difficult, if you are one of these people try breathing in and counting to four, hold you breath for one second, then breathe out for 4 seconds. In time you will learn to pick this up naturally.

2. Empty your head. Doing this meditation you are probably already thinking about which animal could be yours. Try to get rid of these thoughts, a cat may be your favourite animal but it may not be the animal chosen to guide you at this point. Also, try to forget the pile of laundry you need to fold or any other mundan tasks. If it helps do them before so nothing is troubling you when you begin to meditate.

3. Begin by picturing a river and a bridge. Walk onto the bridge. If you still have some troubles on your mind, you can mentally picture dropping these troubles into the river and watching them flow away.

4. On the other side of the bridge there is a forest with a path running through it.You walk this path until you reach a clearing. As you walk this path you may hear the scuffling of leaves or the sound of your animal.

5. In the clearing there is a small calm pool. You kneel down and lean over the pool. You will see your reflection staring back at you. Look past your reflection and gaze into the pool. You may see an animal peer over your shoulder. Or you may even see an animal in the water.
Your totem will choose the best way to present itself to you.

6. Once you see your animal maybe ask it a question that is troubling you. This could be to do with a decision. Or simply thank and ask the totem to continuously guide you through your life.

7. Once you feel ready, thank your totem again and begin to walk back through the forest. Your totem may walk with you to the bridge. When you get to the bridge walk slowly over it remembering what you have spoken of with your totem.

8. Carefully allow yourself to become conscious again. Take your time, letting your breathing become regular again. Give yourself a few minutes before wriggling your toes and fingers and slowly sitting up.

9. A good way to record your experience would be to keep a diary. Then if you ever go back, you can see if your animal has changed. Or you can see what animal appears when you ask a particular question.

I hope you enjoyed and found this meditation useful. Please comment here if you would like to ask me any questions or share your experience.

Freya the Spring Goddess - Dream

Last night I had the most wonderful dream. I thought I would share it and its interpretations on here as a dream study case.

I am walking down a nature trail flowers are surrounding the path, I am aware I'm the spring goddess.  A flock of butterflies fly of a bush of purple flowers and begin to follow me as I walk.
The path then has forest trees on either side of it, I stop but begin to sing/chant. The melody bring a mass of white rabbits out of the trees they to begin to follow me. I can feel their fur against my ankles as  we walk as one mass. Then we move into a field of crop and white rats begin to follow us.

The dream suddenly switches to me being on a rock below a cliff, facing the sea at full tide. A monarch butterfly flies out in front of me, I am dazzled having always wanted to see one. I realise two monarch butterflies are floating on the surface of the water.

The dream changes again I am suddenly a man coming towards an island from a helicopter or plane. I see seals on the islands bank, I know they are only stopping off on their journey to the next island.

Once again my dream switches back, I am walking a path again but this time alone. However, around me I can hear murmurings like people whispering my name I hear 'Freya' but I can not make any of the other names out. I know this path is something significant, and at the end of it there is a white placard embedded into the pathing stone. Sadly I can not recall what it said only that it was important that I walked this path.

The sun is very warm and suddenly I am naked. I kneel down infront of a boulder and lay over it.
I feel the warmth of the sun seeping into my skin. I hear people talking about a summer goddess, or me wanting to be the summer goddess.

I wake up.

On researching the dream I found many things out about it.

There is indeed a Spring goddess called Freya, this was evidence enough to me that my dream had been sent from my spirit guides. She is a Nordic goddess, but I feel that maybe this is just one of her many names as in the dream I felt there were many different names being called but they were all hers.

The dream started with butterfies following me, butterflies I found were symbols for the soul not having to be attached to the body.
The white rabbits were spiritual guides and were showing me the way to an inner spiritual world.
The white rats symbolise help from an unexpected source. I found this rather funny as I am not so fond of rats but in the dream I enjoyed having them follow me.

These first three animal seem to show a very significant journey here. 1st my spirit leaving the body, preparing for a spiritual journey.
Then I am being guided by spiritual guides (white rabbits) to a spiritual place the white rats then aid me to do this. Also, an island is also a symbol for retreating to an inner spiritual place. This all creates a pretty convincing interpretation for this dream.

I think the path may have also represented my path in life, in the future maybe I will receive help from an unexpected place to get where I want to be.

Also the singing int he dreams, on a spiritual level singing helps raise the vibrations. I had to sing to get the white rabbits to follow me. It is quite clear I was having to raise my vibration so they could guide me. The same goes for the white rats.

In addition to the path being my life path; singing is something I want to pursue as a career, which is why it may have also symbolised my journey of becoming a singer.

The next part of the dream that interested me was the seasons. I began the dream being the spring goddess. The season spring represents childhood. At the end of the dream I bask in the sun. There is also talk of becoming a summer goddess. The season summer represents adulthood.

In between these stages I have had to walk a path for me to reach adulthood. The sun also symbolises enlightenment, which I think is what the end of the path shows.

_
I certainly awoke from the dream feeling as if I could walk on air. I believe my spirit guides may have been showing me to have faith in myself and to detach me from my body for a small amount of time to remember the peace that surrounds us all if we open up to it. I was quite stressed at the time of this dream but once I had, had it I felt much better.
